March to May, 2016: The 5.30 slot for younger ears is taken up with a story from the Biggles series by Capt WE Johns. Recent comments about these stories accuse the author of sexism, racism, facism and probably a few other 'isms' as well. However, let us not forget that we are a "Heritage" radio station, and programmes such as Biggles form part of our heritage, do they not?. I have been known to play cigarette comercials. We grew up in a world where it was smart to be a smoker - even if a few of us didn't fall for the tobacco hype and abstained from this weed.
A change in broadcasting standards in recent years has seen an influx of language that would never be heard in times gone by. The new book reading by Bob Geldof called 'Geldof in Africa' contains language I don't approve of, but by today's standards, is acceptable. I have been in touch with the Broadcasting Standards Authority about this, and their response is that it's ok to play this material, but advisable to make a warning before playing. I guess this is heritage stuff in the making.
Be Warned.
